Live in the spirit

Deepen your spiritual journey

A deeper spiritual journey is not primarily about learning more—it is about becoming more like Christ. It is the lifelong process of allowing God to transform your heart, your character, and your desires from the inside out.

Here’s a framework you could follow.

Stage 1: Surrender (Weeks 1–4)

Theme: “Not my will, but Yours.”

Every day:

  • Spend 30–60 minutes in silence before God.
  • Read one chapter from the Gospels.
  • Pray the Lord’s Prayer slowly, reflecting on each phrase.
  • Confess your sins honestly.
  • End by asking, “Lord, what do You want to change in me today?”

Focus:

  • Humility.
  • Honesty.
  • Repentance.
  • Dependence on God.

Stage 2: Healing the Heart (Weeks 5–8)

Theme: “Search me, O God.”

Ask God to reveal:

  • Pride.
  • Fear.
  • Shame.
  • Anger.
  • Control.
  • Bitterness.
  • Need for approval.
  • Unforgiveness.

Journal each day:

  • What emotion dominated me today?
  • What triggered it?
  • What does it reveal about my heart?
  • What truth from Scripture speaks to it?

Pray Psalm 139:23–24 regularly:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart… Lead me in the way everlasting.”

Stage 3: Transformation (Weeks 9–16)

Study one fruit of the Spirit at a time from 5:22–23:

  • Love.
  • Joy.
  • Peace.
  • Patience.
  • Kindness.
  • Goodness.
  • Faithfulness.
  • Gentleness.
  • Self-control.

Each week:

  • Read related Scriptures.
  • Practice that fruit intentionally.
  • Reflect nightly on where you succeeded and where you struggled.

Stage 4: Walking with God

Develop a daily rhythm that includes:

  • Silence.
  • Worship.
  • Scripture meditation.
  • Prayer.
  • Gratitude.
  • Service.
  • Reflection.
  • Rest.

The goal is to become aware of God’s presence throughout the day, not only during formal prayer.

Stage 5: Living for Others

As God heals you, let that healing overflow.

Practice:

  • Encouraging someone each day.
  • Serving without seeking recognition.
  • Listening before speaking.
  • Forgiving quickly.
  • Giving generously.
  • Loving those who are difficult to love.

Jesus taught that loving God and loving your neighbor cannot be separated.

A Daily Prayer

“Father, today I surrender my heart, my thoughts, my words, and my actions to You. Search me and reveal anything in me that does not reflect Christ. Teach me to love as Jesus loved, to forgive as I have been forgiven, to speak truth with gentleness, and to walk humbly with You. Shape my character more than my circumstances. Fill me with Your Spirit so that my life bears the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. May everything I do today bring glory to You. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.”

A helpful way to understand this journey is to think of it as three lifelong movements:

  • Inward: God transforms your heart through repentance, prayer, Scripture, and self-examination.
  • Upward: Your relationship with God deepens through worship, trust, obedience, and communion with Him.
  • Outward: God’s love flows through you in forgiveness, humility, service, generosity, and faithful relationships.

As the apostle wrote in 12:2:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

That renewal is not a single event but a daily walk with God, in which your mind, heart, and life are gradually reshaped into the likeness of Christ.
