We make hundreds of choices every day.
Some are so small that we barely notice them.
What time we wake up.
What we eat.
Where we go.
Who we speak to.
What we spend.
What we watch.
What we say.
What we don’t say.
And then there are the choices that change the direction of our lives.
Who we marry.
Where we live.
What work we do.
Who we allow into our lives.
What we believe.
What we tolerate.
What we walk away from.
What we hold on to.
We tend to think about choices in terms of what we will gain.
But there is another question we don’t ask often enough:
What will this choice cost me?
EVERY YES CONTAINS A NO
Every choice creates a consequence.
When you say yes to one thing, you are often saying no to something else.
If you say yes to working late, you may be saying no to time with your family.
If you say yes to another person’s demands, you may be saying no to your own needs.
If you say yes to comfort, you may be saying no to growth.
If you say yes to fear, you may be saying no to opportunity.
If you say yes to staying exactly where you are, you may be saying no to discovering where you could go.
We cannot choose everything.
Our lives are shaped not only by what we choose, but by what those choices exclude.
THE CHOICE TO DO NOTHING
One of the most misunderstood choices is doing nothing.
We sometimes tell ourselves:
“I’m not making a decision.”
But doing nothing is often a decision.
Not having the conversation is a decision.
Not setting the boundary is a decision.
Not applying for the opportunity is a decision.
Not leaving is a decision.
Not starting is a decision.
Not asking for help is a decision.
And every one of those decisions has consequences.
Sometimes doing nothing is exactly the right thing.
But we should never confuse not choosing with not being responsible for the outcome.
Life continues moving while we stand still.
THE COMFORTABLE CHOICE CAN BE THE EXPENSIVE CHOICE
We often assume that the difficult choice is the expensive one.
But sometimes the opposite is true.
The easy choice may be the one that costs us the most over time.
Staying in a familiar situation can feel safer than starting again.
Keeping quiet can feel easier than speaking honestly.
Continuing an unhealthy habit can feel easier than changing it.
Staying where we are can feel safer than stepping into the unknown.
But comfort has a price.
Sometimes that price is growth.
Sometimes it is freedom.
Sometimes it is opportunity.
Sometimes it is our future.
The fact that something is comfortable does not mean it is good for us.
WE CANNOT ESCAPE CONSEQUENCES
We would all like to make choices without consequences.
We would like the freedom to do whatever we want while avoiding the results of those decisions.
But life doesn’t work that way.
If we don’t look after our bodies, there may eventually be consequences.
If we don’t look after our relationships, there may eventually be consequences.
If we consistently spend more than we earn, there may eventually be consequences.
If we allow resentment to grow, there may eventually be consequences.
If we repeatedly ignore our own needs, there may eventually be consequences.
This isn’t about punishment.
It is about cause and effect.
We plant something.
Something grows.
We make a choice.
Something follows.
THE PRICE OF BECOMING WHO YOU WANT TO BE
There is another side to this.
Positive choices have a price too.
Growth isn’t free.
Changing your life requires something from you.
Becoming healthier may require discipline.
Building a successful business may require sacrifice.
Repairing a relationship may require vulnerability.
Becoming emotionally stronger may require facing painful experiences.
Following a dream may require leaving your comfort zone.
Becoming the person you want to become may require letting go of the person you have been.
There is a price for growth.
But there is also a price for remaining unchanged.
The question isn’t:
“Can I avoid paying?”
You can’t.
The better question is:
“What am I willing to pay for?”
WHAT IS YOUR CHOICE COSTING YOU?
Consider a choice you are currently making.
Maybe it is about your relationship.
Maybe it is about your career.
Maybe it is about money.
Maybe it is about your health.
Maybe it is about your family.
Maybe it is about a dream you keep postponing.
Ask yourself:
What am I gaining from this choice?
Then ask:
What am I giving up?
What does this choice cost me today?
What could it cost me next year?
What could it cost me five years from now?
And perhaps the most important question:
If I continue making this choice, am I willing to accept the consequences?
That question brings responsibility back into our hands.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO FEAR THE PRICE
We cannot know the complete consequences of every decision.
Life is too complicated for that.
But we can become more conscious.
We can stop pretending that our choices don’t matter.
We can stop blaming circumstances for everything.
We can stop waiting for someone else to change our lives.
And we can start asking better questions.
Instead of:
“What do I want?”
Ask:
“What am I willing to give for what I want?”
Instead of:
“Why is this happening to me?”
Ask:
“What part of this is mine to take responsibility for?”
Instead of:
“How do I avoid the consequences?”
Ask:
“What can I learn from them?”
These questions change the way we experience our lives.
CHOOSE CONSCIOUSLY
Every day, we are writing the next chapter of our lives through our choices.
Some choices will be right.
Some will be wrong.
Some will lead us exactly where we hoped to go.
Others will teach us where we don’t want to go again.
But all of them teach us something.
So before you make your next important decision, pause for a moment.
Don’t only ask what you might gain.
Ask what you might lose.
Don’t only look at the immediate reward.
Look at the long-term cost.
Don’t only ask whether the choice feels comfortable.
Ask whether it is aligned with the life you actually want.
Because every choice has a price.
And perhaps wisdom is not learning how to make choices without consequences.
Perhaps wisdom is learning to choose the consequences we are willing to live with.
