The central issue is not that men “give women power” because they want to be mistreated. Rather, many men invest deeply in a relationship, and that investment can make it difficult to recognize or respond to unhealthy behavior.
Some common reasons include:
- Love and attachment. A man may love his partner and keep hoping things will improve. Love often causes people to tolerate behavior they would reject from anyone else.
- A desire to protect the relationship. Many men are taught that their role is to keep the family together, absorb hardship, and avoid conflict.
- Fear of loss. Losing a partner, children, or a shared future can feel more painful than enduring ongoing disrespect.
- Hope for change. If a partner alternates between kindness and disrespect, it’s easy to believe, “The person I fell in love with will come back.”
- Lack of boundaries. Some men were never taught that they can firmly say, “This is unacceptable,” without feeling guilty or selfish.
- Self-worth. If a man believes he has to earn love or accepts less than he deserves, he may tolerate treatment that slowly erodes his confidence.
The question is not really, “Why do men give women power?” The deeper question is, “Why do people sometimes surrender their boundaries to preserve a relationship?” That dynamic can affect men and women alike.
A healthy relationship is one where love does not require the sacrifice of self-respect. When respect disappears repeatedly, the healthiest response is not to tolerate it indefinitely, nor to explode in anger, but to establish clear boundaries and, if necessary, leave the relationship. Love without respect eventually becomes unhealthy. Respect is not something you beg for—it is something you require in any lasting relationship.
