THE HEART & SPIRIT DISCERNMENT SCORECARD
Knowing When to Step Back, Let Go, or Put Someone Down — Without Losing Love
The purpose of this scorecard is not to judge another person.
It is to help me observe what is happening inside me, what pattern is repeating, and whether I am responding from love and compassion or reacting from pain and fear.
The key distinction is:
I don’t step away because I hate you.
I step away because I love myself, I respect you, and I recognize what this relationship is doing to my heart and spirit.
This questionnaire helps me observe patterns rather than isolated incidents.
A difficult moment does not necessarily mean I must leave.
A repeated pattern tells me something different.
HOW TO USE THE SCORECARD
For each question, score yourself:
0 — Never
1 — Rarely
2 — Sometimes
3 — Often
4 — Very often
5 — Consistently
Then ask yourself:
Am I answering this question from what is actually happening, or from what I fear might happen?
That distinction is critical.

PART 10 — THE FINAL QUESTION
After answering everything, sit quietly.
Do not analyse.
Do not justify.
Do not defend.
Do not blame.
Ask yourself:
“If I remove my fear of being alone, my fear of losing this person, my fear of disappointing them, my attachment to the past, and my hope for who they might become—what does love and compassion tell me to do?”
Then listen.
Not to the loudest emotion.
Not to the wound.
Not to the fear.
Listen for the truth.
THE THREE-COLUMN TEST
Before making your decision, write three things:
| PAIN & FEAR | REALITY & PATTERN | LOVE & COMPASSION |
|---|---|---|
| What am I afraid of? | What is actually happening? | What response protects dignity? |
| What wound is being activated? | What keeps repeating? | What allows love without self-abandonment? |
| What am I afraid of losing? | What have I already observed? | What boundary is appropriate? |
| What am I trying to control? | What is outside my control? | What can I release? |
| What am I imagining? | What do I know? | What can I accept? |
The objective is not to eliminate pain and fear.
The objective is to stop allowing pain and fear to become the decision-maker.
THE SCORECARD’S MOST IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
There are two very different questions:
Question 1:
“How much has this person hurt me?”
And:
Question 2:
“What is the pattern telling me about what this relationship is?”
The first question can keep me trapped in pain.
The second question helps me see.
And once I can see clearly, I can choose.
WHEN DO I “PUT SOMEONE DOWN”?
Perhaps the language should actually be:
“When do I put someone down outside of my heart and spirit?”
Because putting someone down does not necessarily mean rejecting them as a human being.
It may mean:
- putting down the responsibility for fixing them;
- putting down the need to be understood by them;
- putting down the expectation that they will change;
- putting down the relationship as it currently exists;
- putting down the need for their approval;
- putting down the emotional access they have to me;
- putting down the role I have been playing;
- putting down the fantasy of what the relationship could become;
- and sometimes, putting down the relationship itself.
And I can do all of that without putting down their humanity.
That is the heart of this book’s distinction:
I can close the door without closing my heart.
I can create distance without creating hatred.
I can say no without becoming cruel.
I can let go without wishing you harm.
I can protect my spirit without losing my compassion.
And perhaps the final principle of the scorecard is this:
When pain and fear are driving the decision, pause.
When love and compassion can see the pattern clearly, choose.
That is knowing when to let go.
