What Needs to Change for Your Confidence to Flourish?
We often ask ourselves, “How can I become more confident?”
But perhaps that is not the right question.
Perhaps the better question is:
“What needs to change in my life for my confidence to flourish?”
Confidence is not simply a thought we create in our minds. It is something we develop through experience.
Every time we tell ourselves the truth, keep a promise to ourselves, establish a healthy boundary, take a difficult step, or act despite our fear, we teach ourselves something important:
I can trust myself.
And self-trust is at the foundation of genuine confidence.
Come back into the body
There is something powerful about moving out of our heads and back into our bodies.
We can spend hours thinking about what we should do.
We analyse.
We worry.
We imagine every possible outcome.
We ask other people what they think.
But eventually, there comes a point where thinking has to become action.
The solar plexus can be used as a powerful metaphor for this transition.
It represents our centre of personal power, will, courage and identity.
It is where we can consciously experience the question:
“What do I know to be true within myself?”
And then:
“What action does that truth require from me?”
Confidence grows through action
You don’t necessarily become confident and then take courageous action.
Very often, it happens the other way around.
You take the action—and confidence grows from the experience.
You set the boundary.
You speak the truth.
You make the decision.
You leave what is no longer right for you.
You begin what you have been postponing.
You allow yourself to be seen.
And something inside you says:
“I did it.”
That experience becomes evidence.
And evidence creates self-trust.
And self-trust allows confidence to flourish.
Rest in the action
Perhaps one of the greatest lessons is learning not to live in constant anticipation of what comes next.
When you know what needs to be done, do what needs to be done—and then rest.
You don’t have to solve your entire life today.
You don’t have to become a completely different person.
You simply have to identify the next honest action.
Then take it.
And rest in knowing that you have taken it.
There is tremendous peace in this.
Instead of constantly asking:
“Am I confident enough?”
Ask:
“What is the action that needs to be taken here?”
Then take that action.
What needs to change?
Perhaps your confidence is not missing.
Perhaps it is waiting for you to remove what is suppressing it.
Fear may need to change.
People-pleasing may need to change.
The need for approval may need to change.
An unhealthy relationship may need to change.
Your relationship with failure may need to change.
The way you speak to yourself may need to change.
Or perhaps you simply need to stop abandoning yourself every time somebody else disagrees with you.
Your confidence may already be there.
It may simply need space to emerge.
The world needs the real you
There is a difference between becoming confident so that people will admire you and becoming confident enough to live authentically.
The second is far more powerful.
The world doesn’t need another carefully constructed version of you.
It needs you.
Your experience.
Your wisdom.
Your compassion.
Your mistakes.
Your story.
Your particular way of seeing the world.
Your unique contribution.
So come back into your body.
Feel what is happening within you.
Listen.
Ask yourself what needs to change.
Then identify the action.
And take it.
Don’t wait until you feel completely ready.
Don’t wait until fear disappears.
Don’t wait until everybody approves.
Take the next honest step.
And then rest in it.
Because confidence is not something you have to manufacture.
It is something that can flourish when you repeatedly prove to yourself that you are willing to live according to what you know to be true.
The question is not:
“How do I become more confident?”
The deeper question is:
“What needs to change—and what action is mine to take now?”
Find that action.
Take it.
And let your confidence flourish from there.
