Breathe Out What You Cannot Change

Inside each of us, there are conversations that never seem to end.

We imagine the apology we wish someone would give us. We imagine the explanation that would finally make everything make sense. We imagine the moment when someone will finally understand us—when they will see our hearts, recognise our intentions, understand why we did what we did, and perhaps even move forward with us.

We create entire conversations in our minds.

In those conversations, people say the things we needed them to say. They understand what we wanted them to understand. Situations unfold differently. Wounds are acknowledged. Mistakes are corrected.

But life isn’t always like that.

Sometimes the apology never comes.

Sometimes the explanation never arrives.

Sometimes someone will never understand your heart or your intentions in the way you hoped they would.

And one of the hardest lessons in life is accepting that closure does not always come from another person. Sometimes, closure is something we choose for ourselves.

Today, I want you to stop holding on to apologies you may never receive.

Stop waiting for explanations that may never come.

Stop carrying the expectation that someone else must understand you before you are allowed to move forward.

You don’t have to keep standing at the door of the past, waiting for someone to return with the words you needed to hear.

You can let go.

Not because what happened didn’t matter.

Not because you weren’t hurt.

Not because the other person was right.

But because your life is happening now.

And you deserve to be present for it.

So today, breathe.

Just stop for a moment.

Become aware of your breath.

Notice how you breathe when you are carrying emotional weight. Perhaps your breathing becomes shallow. Perhaps you hold your breath without even realising it.

Now take a slow, deep breath in.

And as you breathe out, imagine releasing something you’ve been carrying.

Breathe out the conversation you keep replaying.

Breathe out the apology you are still waiting for.

Breathe out the need to be understood.

Breathe out the anger.

Breathe out the disappointment.

Breathe out the version of the past that you keep wishing could have been different.

Again.

Breathe deeply.

And breathe out.

You have the power to control your own breath.

Perhaps today is the day you decide that you are no longer going to live on shallow breaths because you are holding on to yesterday.

Perhaps today you choose to breathe deeply again.

Not merely air.

The essence of life.

Breathe deeply into this moment.

Feel the life that is still here.

Feel the possibilities that still exist.

Feel the freedom that comes when you stop demanding that the past become something it can no longer be.

You cannot control what another person thinks.

You cannot control whether they apologise.

You cannot control whether they understand your heart.

You cannot change what has already happened.

But you can choose what you carry forward.

And sometimes healing begins with something as simple as one conscious breath.

Breathe in.

Receive life.

Breathe out.

Release what you no longer need to carry.

Again.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

And remind yourself:

I don’t need their apology to move forward.
I don’t need their understanding to know my own heart.
I don’t need the past to change before I can choose peace.

Today, give yourself permission to let go.

Not of the lessons.

Not of the love.

Not of the memories.

But of the weight.

Breathe it out.

Release it.

And then breathe deeply into the life that is waiting for you.

You are here.
You are breathing.
You are alive.
And that is where your life begins again.

Releasing what you cannot change, forgiving, surrendering the past, and breathing into the life God gives us today—connects beautifully with several biblical passages.

1. Philippians 3:13–14 — Letting go of the past
“Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.”
This is probably the strongest scripture for your message. Paul speaks about deliberately releasing what is behind and reaching toward what lies ahead.

Your message: You cannot move forward while continually reaching backward.

2. Isaiah 43:18–19 — God is doing something new
“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing.”
This beautifully supports your idea of releasing the conversations and situations that belong to the past.

Your message: Perhaps you are so focused on what should have happened that you cannot see what God is doing now.

3. Proverbs 3:5–6 — Surrendering the need to understand
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
This speaks directly to your idea of letting go of explanations.

Sometimes we desperately want to understand why someone did something, why something happened, or why someone couldn’t see our heart.

But Scripture invites us to trust God even when we don’t have all the answers.

Your message: You don’t have to understand everything in order to let go.

4. Ephesians 4:31–32 — Releasing bitterness
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger… be put away from you… And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another.”
This supports the idea of breathing out resentment and releasing the emotional weight we carry.

Forgiveness doesn’t necessarily mean pretending something didn’t happen. It means refusing to allow what happened to continue controlling your heart.

5. Matthew 11:28 — Putting down the burden
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
This is particularly powerful alongside your breathing imagery.

You could say:

“Perhaps the breath you are holding is symbolic of the burden you have been carrying. Jesus invites you to put it down.”

6. 1 Peter 5:7 — Give God what you are carrying
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
The word “casting” is powerful. It isn’t merely placing something down gently. It carries the sense of throwing or handing something over.

You don’t have to carry everything yourself.

7. Psalm 46:10 — Be still
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
This could become a beautiful transition in your blog:

Stop.
Breathe.
Be still.
And remember that you don’t have to solve everything today.

8. 2 Corinthians 5:17 — Becoming new
“Old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
This gives your message a beautiful ending: letting go isn’t simply about losing something; it creates space for something new.

The three I would choose for your blog
If you don’t want to overload the article with Scripture, I’d use these three:

Philippians 3:13–14 — Let go of what is behind.

Matthew 11:28 — Give your burdens to Christ.

Isaiah 43:18–19 — Make room for what God is doing next.

Together they create a very natural progression:

Release the past → surrender the burden → embrace the new.

And your breathing metaphor fits beautifully:

Breathe in God’s grace.
Breathe out the burden.
Breathe in the present.
Breathe out the past.
Breathe in life.
And trust God with what comes next.
