One of the greatest promises in the Christian faith is not simply that we have been forgiven, but that we now belong to Christ forever. When we choose to follow Jesus, something eternal changes. Our identity changes, our destiny changes, and our names are written in the Book of Life.
Jesus told His disciples:
“However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:20)
Notice what Jesus emphasized. He did not tell them to celebrate their accomplishments, their gifts, or even the miracles they had witnessed. He told them to rejoice because their names were written in heaven. That is the greatest miracle of all.
From Death to Life
Before we knew Christ, the Bible says we were spiritually dead because of sin.
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Sin separates us from God. Left to ourselves, we walk the path of spiritual death. But Jesus came to change that.
He declared:
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even though they die.” (John 11:25)
When we place our faith in Christ, we are no longer identified by our past, our failures, or our sins. We become new creations.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Our spiritual record changes. We move from death into life.
The Book of Life
The Bible speaks several times about the Book of Life. It is God’s record of those who belong to Him.
In Revelation we read:
“Nothing impure will ever enter it… but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.” (Revelation 21:27)
This book belongs to Jesus—the Lamb of God who gave His life for humanity. Every person who trusts Him receives the gift of eternal life.
This is why Christians often speak about being “saved.” Salvation is not merely escaping judgment. It is entering into a living relationship with Christ and becoming a citizen of God’s Kingdom.
What Does It Mean That My Name Is Written There?
Having your name written in the Book of Life means:
- You belong to Jesus.
- Your sins have been forgiven.
- You have been adopted into God’s family.
- Your identity is no longer defined by your past.
- Eternal life is your inheritance.
- Nothing can separate you from God’s love as you remain in Christ.
This assurance produces peace rather than fear. Christians do not follow Christ merely to earn salvation. They follow Him because they have received salvation through His grace.
Following Christ Daily
Following Jesus is much more than believing certain truths. It is choosing every day to walk with Him.
Jesus said:
“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)
To follow Christ means:
- Loving God with all your heart.
- Loving your neighbour.
- Forgiving others.
- Living in truth.
- Walking in humility.
- Serving rather than seeking to be served.
- Becoming more like Jesus every day.
As we follow Him, the Holy Spirit transforms our character from the inside out.
Living Like Citizens of Heaven
If our names are written in heaven, then heaven becomes our true citizenship.
Paul reminds believers:
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20)
This changes how we live on earth. We pursue love instead of hatred, forgiveness instead of bitterness, generosity instead of selfishness, and truth instead of deception.
The Christian life is not about trying to become worthy enough for God. It is about living as people who already belong to Him.
The Hope of Every Believer
Near the end of the Bible we find one of the most comforting promises:
“The one who is victorious will… never have his name blotted out of the Book of Life, but I will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.” (Revelation 3:5)
What incredible assurance! Jesus Himself promises to acknowledge those who faithfully belong to Him.
This hope gives courage in suffering, strength in temptation, and peace in uncertainty.
A Life Worth Living
The greatest news any person can ever receive is not wealth, success, or recognition. It is knowing that through Jesus Christ they have passed from death to life.
Our names are no longer associated with spiritual death but are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Therefore, let us walk closely with Christ every day. Let us love as He loved, forgive as He forgave, and serve as He served.
And above all, let us rejoice—not because of what we have achieved—but because our names are written in heaven.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
This is the invitation of the Gospel: to leave death behind, receive the life Christ offers, and walk with Him forever.
