Forgiveness

Forgiveness is NOT

Forgiveness is one of the most misunderstood ideas in human relationships. Many people believe that forgiving means pretending nothing happened, excusing bad behavior, or allowing someone to continue hurting them. It does not.

Here are some things forgiveness is not:

  • Forgiveness is not saying that what happened was acceptable. Wrong remains wrong. Forgiveness acknowledges the truth instead of denying it.
  • Forgiveness is not forgetting. Some experiences leave lasting memories. Healing does not require erasing those memories; it changes the power they have over you.
  • Forgiveness is not trusting someone automatically. Trust is earned through honesty, accountability, and consistent change. You can forgive someone and still decide they are not safe to trust.
  • Forgiveness is not reconciliation. Reconciliation requires both people to participate. It depends on repentance, responsibility, and a willingness to rebuild the relationship. Forgiveness can happen even if reconciliation never does.
  • Forgiveness is not removing healthy boundaries. In fact, forgiveness often makes boundaries clearer. You can forgive and still say, “You may not treat me this way again.”
  • Forgiveness is not denying your pain. It does not ask you to ignore grief, anger, disappointment, or betrayal. Healing begins by honestly acknowledging those emotions.
  • Forgiveness is not instant. Sometimes it is a decision made once. Sometimes it is a journey that must be renewed many times as painful memories return.
  • Forgiveness is not weakness. It takes courage to release resentment. Holding onto bitterness often feels powerful, but forgiving requires far greater inner strength.
  • Forgiveness is not allowing injustice. Someone may still need to face legal, professional, or personal consequences for what they have done. Forgiveness does not cancel accountability.
  • Forgiveness is not for the benefit of the offender alone. It is also a gift to yourself. Bitterness can imprison the heart, while forgiveness opens the door to peace and freedom.

From a Christian perspective, forgiveness reflects God’s heart. Jesus prayed from the cross, “Father, forgive them,” yet He never declared evil to be good. God’s forgiveness is always joined with truth, justice, and love. We are called to forgive because we have been forgiven, but we are never called to pretend that sin did not happen.

Ultimately, forgiveness is the deliberate choice to release the debt of personal vengeance into God’s hands. It is refusing to let another person’s actions define your future. It does not rewrite the past, but it can transform the future. Forgiveness is not saying, “What you did doesn’t matter.” It is saying, “What you did mattered deeply, but I will not allow it to keep my heart captive any longer.”
