Personal Power

Taking my power back

Taking your power back is not about becoming stronger than other people. It is about no longer allowing other people, circumstances, or your past to determine who you are and how you live.

Power is not something someone else gives you.

It is something you stop giving away.

You give away your power every time:

  • You allow someone else’s opinion to determine your worth.
  • You allow yesterday’s mistakes to define today’s identity.
  • You react impulsively instead of responding wisely.
  • You wait for someone else’s approval before moving forward.
  • You hold onto resentment and allow it to occupy your heart.
  • You live in fear instead of faith.

Taking your power back begins with one decision:

“I will no longer allow what happens around me to determine what happens within me.”

This requires daily practice.

When someone criticizes you, instead of defending yourself immediately, pause. Ask yourself, “Is there truth here that can help me grow? If not, I release it.”

When someone rejects you, remind yourself, “Their decision does not determine my value. My worth comes from God.”

When guilt from your past returns, remember that repentance means turning toward God, learning, and walking differently. Shame says, “You are your past.” Grace says, “Your past can teach you, but it does not have to define you.”

When fear appears, do not ask, “How do I get rid of this fear?” Instead ask, “What is the next faithful step I can take despite this fear?”

Every time you choose wisdom over impulse… Every time you choose forgiveness over bitterness… Every time you choose peace over anxiety… Every time you choose truth over self-deception…

You reclaim a little more of your true power.

Jesus demonstrated this throughout His life. He was never controlled by praise or criticism. Crowds celebrated Him one day and called for His crucifixion a few days later. Yet His mission did not change because His identity did not come from public opinion.

As He said:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

The apostle Paul also wrote:

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

Renewing your mind is how you take your power back. You stop allowing old beliefs, old wounds, and old reactions to control your present.

Each morning, remind yourself:

  • I cannot control what today brings.
  • I can control my attitude.
  • I can control my words.
  • I can control my choices.
  • I can control where I place my attention.
  • I can choose love instead of fear.
  • I can choose faith instead of anxiety.
  • I can choose forgiveness instead of resentment.
  • I can choose wisdom instead of reaction.

This is where your power lives.

Not in controlling people.

Not in controlling circumstances.

Not in winning every argument.

But in governing your own heart.

As teaches:

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)

And as also says:

“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.” (Proverbs 16:32)

That is true power.

It is quiet.

It is steady.

It is rooted in God.

It cannot be taken from you unless you choose to surrender it.

Your true power is this: to remain faithful to who God calls you to be, regardless of what life or other people place before you.
