INTRODUCTION
The Person Behind the Results
There is a question I want you to consider before you read another word:
Who do you believe you are?
Not what do you do.
Not what have you achieved.
Not what has happened to you.
Not what other people have said about you.
I am asking something deeper.
Who do you believe you are?
Because the answer to that question may be influencing your life far more than you realise.
Most of us spend enormous amounts of time trying to change our circumstances. We want different relationships, more money, better health, greater confidence, more success, less fear, more peace, and a completely different future.
So we change our goals.
We change our strategies.
We change our habits.
We make promises to ourselves.
We start again on Monday.
And yet, somehow, we often find ourselves back in exactly the same place.
Why?
Because we are trying to change our results without first changing the person producing those results.
There is a powerful sequence operating in every person’s life:
Identity → Behaviour → Results.
Who you believe you are influences how you behave.
How you behave repeatedly produces your results.
And those results often become further evidence for the identity you already believe you have.
It becomes a cycle.
You believe something about yourself.
You behave according to that belief.
You produce results consistent with that behaviour.
Then you look at those results and say,
“See? That’s just who I am.”
And the cycle begins again.
Perhaps you have experienced this yourself.
You decide that you are going to become more confident, but deep down you still see yourself as insecure.
You decide you are going to become financially successful, but internally you still identify as someone who never has enough.
You decide you are going to create healthier relationships, but you continue carrying the identity of someone who expects rejection, abandonment or disappointment.
You tell yourself you are going to change your life, while continuing to think, speak and act from the identity of the person who created your current life.
That is the contradiction.
We want a new life while continuing to be the old person.
And then we become frustrated when the results don’t change.
I know this because I have experienced it myself.
There have been periods in my life when I repeatedly carried yesterday’s identity into today.
I woke up believing I was the same person I had been the day before.
I thought the same thoughts.
I carried the same assumptions.
I responded to life from the same beliefs.
I repeated familiar behaviours.
And then I wondered why I kept getting familiar results.
The problem wasn’t necessarily my goals.
The problem wasn’t always my circumstances.
The problem was who I was being while pursuing those goals.
That realisation changed the way I began to look at personal transformation.
Perhaps the most important discovery is this:
You are not required to remain the person you have been.
Your history may explain you, but it does not have to define you.
Your mistakes may have shaped you, but they do not have to become your identity.
Your failures may have happened to you, but they do not have to determine who you become.
And the opinions other people have formed about you do not have to become the truth you live from.
There is a difference between having an experience and making that experience your identity.
There is a difference between saying:
“I failed.”
and saying:
“I am a failure.”
There is a difference between:
“I made a bad decision.”
and:
“I am a bad person.”
There is a difference between:
“I am struggling financially.”
and:
“I am someone who can never be financially successful.”
The first statements describe experiences.
The second statements create identities.
And identities are powerful.
Once you begin to believe “this is who I am,” your mind starts looking for ways to remain consistent with that belief.
You don’t simply behave.
You behave as the person you believe yourself to be.
That is why BECOME is not simply another book about setting goals, positive thinking or changing habits.
It is about going underneath all of that.
It is about discovering the identity from which your life is currently being created.
Because perhaps the question is not:
“What do I need to do differently?”
Perhaps the better question is:
“Who do I need to become?”
That is a completely different question.
And it can lead to a completely different life.
BECOME invites you to examine the person behind your patterns.
The beliefs behind your behaviours.
The identity behind your decisions.
And ultimately, the person behind your results.
You will be challenged to look honestly at the identities you have carried—some consciously, many unconsciously.
Some were created by your own experiences.
Some were given to you by your parents.
Some came from relationships.
Some came from rejection.
Some came from success.
Some came from failure.
Some were created during moments when you were too young to understand what was happening.
And some identities may have served you once but are now preventing you from becoming who you are capable of being.
The purpose of this book is not to tell you that you can simply pretend to be someone different.
This is not about putting on a mask.
It is not about repeating empty affirmations while ignoring reality.
It is about becoming conscious of the identity you have been living from—and then deliberately deciding whether that identity still deserves to lead your life.
Because there comes a moment when you have to stop asking,
“What happened to me?”
and begin asking,
“Who am I choosing to become because of what happened to me?”
That is where transformation begins.
You cannot rewrite yesterday.
But you can stop allowing yesterday to write tomorrow.
Your past may have created a version of you.
BECOME is about creating the next version.
Not a perfect version.
Not a fictional version.
Not someone you are pretending to be.
But a more conscious, intentional and empowered version of yourself.
The person you become will determine the behaviours you are willing to sustain.
Those behaviours will influence the results you experience.
And eventually, those results will become evidence of the person you have chosen to become.
So before we begin, I want you to put your goals aside for a moment.
Forget what you want to achieve.
Forget what you want to acquire.
Forget what you want to change.
Forget the person you think you should be.
And ask yourself one simple question:
If I continue being exactly who I am today, what will my life look like tomorrow?
Then ask an even more important question:
Who would I need to become to create the life I truly want?
Your answers may change everything.
Because your future is not only waiting for you to achieve something.
Your future is waiting for you to BECOME someone.
And that someone begins with a choice.
Who will you choose to be?
