THE CANVAS OF LIFE
A Four-Week Life Coaching Journey
Reclaim Your Story. Reweave Your Life. Create Your Future.
INTRODUCTION
We all arrive in this world with a blank canvas.
As we move through life, experiences begin to paint upon it. Some strokes are beautiful. Others are painful. Some colours are chosen consciously. Others are placed there by our parents, relationships, circumstances, disappointments, successes and the expectations of society.
Over time, we can begin to believe that the picture already painted is who we are.
But it isn’t.
The picture is our story.
And our story can be understood, questioned, reframed and, where possible, painted differently.
This four-week life coaching course is designed to help participants step back from their lives and see the bigger picture.
We will explore four powerful metaphors:
The Canvas — How do I see myself and my life?
The Weaving — How have my experiences, choices and relationships created the pattern of my life?
The Carpet — What do I choose to carry forward, and what can I leave behind?
The Sandcastle — Can I accept impermanence while still creating something meaningful?
This is not about creating a perfect life.
It is about creating a more conscious life.

WEEK ONE
THE CANVAS
“Who Am I Becoming?”
Theme
Before we can change our lives, we need to become aware of the picture we are currently living.
The first week is about self-awareness.
We examine the beliefs, experiences, identities and stories that have shaped our current canvas.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
- Explore their life story.
- Identify significant life experiences.
- Identify beliefs formed from those experiences.
- Explore how they currently see themselves.
- Identify areas where their current identity may be limiting them.
- Begin separating “what happened to me” from “who I am.”
COACHING CONVERSATION
Begin with the question:
“If your life were a canvas, what would it look like today?”
Ask:
- What colours dominate your canvas?
- Where are the bright colours?
- Where are the dark colours?
- Are there areas that remain unfinished?
- Are there parts you would like to paint over?
- Which parts of your canvas are you proud of?
- Which parts do you avoid looking at?
- Who helped paint your canvas?
- Which parts did you paint yourself?
- Which parts were painted by circumstances beyond your control?
EXERCISE 1
MY LIFE CANVAS
Divide a page into five sections:
1. Childhood
What experiences shaped me?
2. Relationships
Who influenced the person I became?
3. Successes
What experiences showed me what I was capable of?
4. Pain
What experiences changed me?
5. Turning Points
Which moments changed the direction of my life?
Participants write freely.
There is no requirement to make the story beautiful.
The objective is to make it honest.
EXERCISE 2
THE BELIEFS BEHIND THE BRUSHSTROKES
Complete:
Because this happened, I began to believe…
Examples:
“Because I was rejected, I began to believe I wasn’t good enough.”
“Because I failed, I began to believe I wasn’t capable.”
“Because someone hurt me, I began to believe people cannot be trusted.”
“Because I succeeded, I began to believe I must always perform.”
Then ask:
“Is this belief absolutely true?”
And:
“Who would I be without this belief?”
WEEK ONE COACHING CHALLENGE
For seven days, participants practise observation without judgement.
Every evening they answer:
- What did I feel today?
- What triggered that feeling?
- What story did I tell myself about what happened?
- Was that story fact or interpretation?
- What could I choose to think differently tomorrow?
WEEK ONE AFFIRMATION
“My past has influenced my story, but it does not have to determine my future.”
WEEK TWO
THE WEAVING
“What Patterns Am I Creating?”
Theme
A single thread may seem insignificant.
But thousands of threads woven together create a pattern.
Our lives work in much the same way.
Every thought, decision, relationship, habit and reaction becomes another thread.
Week Two is about identifying the patterns.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
- Identify recurring life patterns.
- Examine relationship patterns.
- Explore emotional triggers.
- Identify repeated behaviours.
- Understand the connection between thoughts, emotions and actions.
- Recognise where they are living reactively rather than intentionally.
COACHING CONVERSATION
Ask:
“What keeps happening in your life?”
Not:
“Who is to blame?”
But:
“What pattern can I see?”
Explore:
- Do I repeatedly choose the same type of relationship?
- Do I repeatedly avoid difficult conversations?
- Do I sabotage opportunities?
- Do I repeatedly doubt myself?
- Do I struggle to say no?
- Do I seek approval?
- Do I become defensive when challenged?
- Do I keep returning to environments that hurt me?
- Do I abandon things when they become difficult?
EXERCISE 1
THE PATTERN MAP
Choose one recurring problem.
Write:
Trigger → Thought → Emotion → Behaviour → Consequence
For example:
Criticism
↓
“I am failing.”
↓
Shame
↓
Withdrawal
↓
Relationship distance
Then ask:
“Where in this pattern can I make a different choice?”
The answer becomes a potential intervention point.
EXERCISE 2
THE THREADS OF MY LIFE
Participants identify their most important “threads”:
Family
What did I learn?
Relationships
What did I learn?
Money
What did I learn?
Success
What did I learn?
Failure
What did I learn?
Self-worth
What did I learn?
Spirituality
What did I learn?
Responsibility
What did I learn?
Then distinguish between:
What I was taught
and
What I now choose to believe.
EXERCISE 3
THE PEOPLE IN MY WEAVE
Create three circles:
People who strengthened me
People who taught me
People who wounded me
The purpose is not blame.
The purpose is understanding.
Ask:
“What did each relationship teach me about myself?”
WEEK TWO COACHING CHALLENGE
For seven days, participants identify one recurring pattern every day.
They write:
“Today I noticed that I…”
Then:
“The old pattern would be…”
And:
“My new choice could be…”
WEEK TWO AFFIRMATION
“I can change the pattern by changing the thread I choose to weave today.”
WEEK THREE
THE CARPET
“What Will I Carry Forward?”
Theme
A carpet is made from thousands of threads.
Some are beautiful.
Some are worn.
Some are damaged.
But eventually we have to decide what belongs in the pattern we carry forward.
Week Three is about release, forgiveness, acceptance and intentional choice.
SESSION OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
- Identify emotional baggage.
- Explore unresolved experiences.
- Distinguish forgiveness from approval.
- Identify beliefs and behaviours they are ready to release.
- Develop healthier boundaries.
- Decide what they want to carry forward.
COACHING CONVERSATION
Ask:
“What are you carrying that no longer belongs to you?”
This may include:
- Anger
- Shame
- Guilt
- Resentment
- Fear
- Regret
- Expectations
- Other people’s opinions
- Old identities
- Unfinished conversations
- The need for approval
- The need to be right
- The need to control everything
EXERCISE 1
THE BAGGAGE INVENTORY
Create three columns:
| I Am Carrying | Where It Came From | Do I Still Need It? |
|---|---|---|
| Fear | Past experience | No |
| Guilt | Mistake | Perhaps |
| Anger | Betrayal | Need to process |
| Expectation | Family | No |
The objective is not to force release.
The objective is to create awareness and choice.
EXERCISE 2
WHAT I FORGIVE
Complete:
“I forgive myself for…”
“I forgive ______ for…”
“I accept that…”
“I cannot change…”
“I can choose…”
“I am ready to release…”
Forgiveness here means releasing the power that the past has over the present.
It does not mean denying what happened.
It does not mean allowing continued harm.
It does not require reconciliation.
EXERCISE 3
MY NEW BOUNDARIES
Complete:
I will no longer…
I will begin…
I will protect…
I will say no to…
I will say yes to…
I will no longer negotiate my…
This becomes the beginning of a personal boundary framework.
THE RELEASE RITUAL
Participants write down three things they are ready to stop carrying.
They then say:
**”This happened.
It mattered.
It affected me.
But it does not own me.
I choose what I carry forward.”**
They may then tear up the paper, fold it away, or use another meaningful personal ritual.
WEEK THREE COACHING CHALLENGE
Every day:
Release one thing.
It might be:
- A negative thought.
- An unnecessary argument.
- A resentment.
- A perfectionist expectation.
- An old habit.
- A need to control another person’s behaviour.
Then replace it with a conscious choice.
WEEK THREE AFFIRMATION
“I honour my past without allowing it to become the prison of my future.”
WEEK FOUR
THE SANDCASTLE
“What Will I Create While I Am Here?”
Theme
A sandcastle is beautiful precisely because it is temporary.
The tide will eventually come.
That does not make the castle meaningless.
It makes the act of building meaningful.
Life is temporary.
Our relationships change.
Our circumstances change.
Our bodies change.
Our careers change.
People come and go.
Seasons begin and end.
The question is therefore not:
“How do I make everything permanent?”
The question becomes:
“What will I create with the time I have?”
SESSION OBJECTIVES
Participants will:
- Develop a personal vision.
- Clarify their values.
- Identify what truly matters.
- Set meaningful goals.
- Create a 90-day action plan.
- Develop a personal definition of success.
- Learn to live intentionally rather than simply react to life.
EXERCISE 1
THE PERFECT DAY
Imagine you wake up five years from now.
Your life is not perfect.
But it is deeply aligned with who you want to become.
Where are you?
Who is with you?
How do you spend your morning?
What work are you doing?
How do you feel?
What relationships surround you?
What have you stopped doing?
What have you started doing?
What matters most?
Write the story of that day.
EXERCISE 2
MY FIVE VALUES
Choose five values that you want your life to represent.
Examples:
- Love
- Freedom
- Faith
- Family
- Courage
- Integrity
- Growth
- Service
- Creativity
- Health
- Adventure
- Wisdom
- Peace
- Contribution
Then ask:
“Am I currently living according to these values?”
Score each from 1–10.
EXERCISE 3
THE LIFE COMPASS
Create eight areas:
- Self
- Relationships
- Family
- Career
- Finances
- Health
- Spirituality
- Contribution
Score each area from 1–10.
Then ask:
“Which one area, if improved, would positively influence the others?”
That becomes the starting point.
EXERCISE 4
MY 90-DAY CREATION PLAN
Choose three goals.
Goal One — Personal
What do I want to change within myself?
Goal Two — Practical
What do I want to create or accomplish?
Goal Three — Relational
How do I want to improve the way I connect with others?
For each goal identify:
What?
Why?
How?
By when?
What could stop me?
What will I do when that happens?
Who can support me?
THE FINAL LIFE CANVAS
At the end of Week Four, participants create their own Life Canvas.
It contains:
MY STORY
Where I have come from.
MY LESSONS
What life has taught me.
MY RELEASE
What I am leaving behind.
MY VALUES
What matters to me.
MY VISION
Where I am going.
MY PURPOSE
Why I am going there.
MY ACTION
What I will do next.
THE FOUR QUESTIONS
Participants leave the course with four questions they can continue asking throughout their lives.
1. THE CANVAS
What picture am I currently painting?
2. THE WEAVING
What patterns am I creating?
3. THE CARPET
What am I choosing to carry forward?
4. THE SANDCASTLE
What am I creating while I have the opportunity?
FINAL COACHING SESSION
The coach asks the participant:
“What have you discovered about yourself?”
“What are you no longer willing to carry?”
“What pattern are you ready to change?”
“What kind of person are you becoming?”
“What matters most to you now?”
“What will you do differently from tomorrow?”
“What is the first small step?”
THE 30-DAY CONTINUATION
After completing the four weeks, participants continue for another 30 days.
Every morning:
What do I want to create today?
Every evening:
What did I create today?
Before reacting:
Is this part of my old pattern or my new story?
When facing difficulty:
What is this experience teaching me?
When something ends:
What can I honour and release?
When something begins:
What kind of person do I want to be within it?
THE LIFE COACHING MODEL
The entire program can be remembered through four words:
SEE
See your canvas.
Become aware.
UNDERSTAND
Understand your weaving.
Recognise your patterns.
RELEASE
Release what no longer belongs.
Choose what you carry.
CREATE
Create your sandcastle.
Build something meaningful with the life you have.
THE COACH’S ROLE
The coach is not there to tell participants how to live.
The coach is there to help them see.
A good coach asks questions that create awareness.
A powerful coach helps a person discover their own answers.
The coach does not repaint someone’s canvas.
The coach hands them the brush.
FINAL MESSAGE TO PARTICIPANTS
Your life is a work of art.
Some of the brushstrokes were chosen by you.
Some were chosen by others.
Some were created by circumstances you never asked for.
Some parts of the canvas may be difficult to look at.
But the story is not over.
There are still colours available.
There are still threads to weave.
There are still parts of the carpet to create.
And there is still sand between your fingers.
You may not control the tide.
You may not control how long the sandcastle stands.
But you can choose to build.
You can choose what you build.
You can choose who you build it with.
And you can choose to be fully present while you are building it.
The goal is not to create a perfect life.
The goal is to create a life that is consciously lived.
See it.
Understand it.
Release it.
Create it.
Live it.
YOUR LIFE. YOUR CANVAS. YOUR CHOICE.
