Loving from lack or loving for abundance

Are You Loving From Love or For Love?

There is a question I believe we should ask ourselves whenever we enter a relationship, especially an intimate one:

Am I doing this from love, or am I doing this for love?

At first, the difference may seem insignificant. After all, if I am being kind, generous, supportive and caring, surely that must be love?

Not necessarily.

Sometimes we do loving things because we genuinely have love to give. And sometimes we do loving things because we desperately want to receive love in return.

The behaviour can look exactly the same.

But the place it comes from is completely different.

From Love Is Abundance

When I do something from love, I am giving from what I already have.

I don’t need you to love me in order for me to feel worthy.

I don’t need to make you happy so that you will stay.

I don’t need to constantly prove myself.

I don’t need to keep score.

I give because giving is an expression of who I am.

This is abundance.

I have love within me, and I allow that love to move outward into the world.

I can care for you without possessing you.

I can support you without controlling you.

I can give without demanding.

I can love you without needing you to complete me.

From love, I give because I have.

For Love Is Lack

But when I do something for love, there can be a very different motivation underneath my behaviour.

I may be trying to earn love.

I may be trying to secure someone’s affection.

I may be afraid that if I stop giving, they will leave.

I may tolerate things I shouldn’t tolerate because I don’t want to be alone.

I may constantly adapt myself to become what I think someone else wants me to be.

I may say yes when I want to say no.

I may give and give and give, secretly hoping that eventually someone will give me what I have been looking for all along.

Love has become a transaction.

“I will give you this, hoping you will give me love in return.”

That is not abundance.

That is lack.

The Same Action Can Come From Two Completely Different Places

This is what makes this distinction so powerful.

Two people can perform exactly the same action, but their internal experience can be completely different.

One person gives because they want to.

The other gives because they are afraid not to.

One person stays because they choose to.

The other stays because they are terrified of leaving.

One person says, “I love you,” as an expression of what already exists inside them.

The other says, “I love you,” hoping to hear it back so they can finally feel secure.

The outside behaviour may look identical.

The intention is different.

And perhaps this is where we need to become more honest with ourselves.

Ask Yourself: Where Is This Coming From?

Before you send the message, ask yourself:

Am I reaching out from love, or am I reaching out because I need reassurance?

Before you give:

Am I giving because I genuinely want to, or because I want to be chosen?

Before you stay:

Am I staying because there is love here, or because I am afraid of being alone?

Before you change yourself:

Am I growing because I want to grow, or am I changing because I believe I am not enough?

These questions take us beneath our behaviour and into our motivation.

And that is where the real work begins.

Love Does Not Need to Be Earned

Perhaps one of the greatest shifts we can make is understanding that love does not have to be earned through performance.

You don’t have to become indispensable to deserve love.

You don’t have to sacrifice yourself to deserve love.

You don’t have to constantly prove your value.

You don’t have to become everything someone else wants you to be.

When you begin to recognise your own capacity for love, something changes.

You stop approaching relationships as someone searching for what is missing.

You begin approaching them as someone who already has something beautiful to share.

That is abundance.

And from that place, love becomes less about getting and more about giving.

Less about securing and more about connecting.

Less about fear and more about freedom.

So, From Love or For Love?

Perhaps this is the question we should carry into every important relationship:

Am I doing this from love, or am I doing this for love?

Because when I act from love, I am expressing abundance.

When I act for love, I may be revealing a place of lack.

And the goal isn’t to judge ourselves when we discover that some of our behaviour has come from lack.

The goal is simply to become aware.

Because awareness gives us a choice.

I can notice the fear.

I can notice the need.

I can notice the pattern.

And then I can ask:

“What would I do differently if I knew I was already enough?”

Perhaps that is where real love begins.

Not when someone finally gives us the love we have been searching for.

But when we discover that we have been carrying the capacity to love all along.

Don’t love someone because you need love.
Love because you have love to give.

Don’t do it for love.
Do it from love.
