The Place Where We Get Stuck: Choosing Between Hunger and Thirst
There is a place in life where many of us get stuck—not because we do not know what we need, but because we cannot decide which need we are willing to pursue.
We hunger for something, while at the same time we thirst for something else.
We want success, but we also want peace.
We want freedom, but we are afraid to let go.
We want love, but we fear vulnerability.
We want change, but we cling to what is familiar.
We want purpose, but we continue living according to expectations that no longer belong to us.
And so we stand between our hunger and our thirst.
The image of the donkey caught between food and water provides a powerful metaphor for this human condition. The donkey sees both possibilities but cannot choose between them. Unable to decide, it remains trapped in the middle—and ultimately receives neither.
Human beings can do the same.
We can spend years standing between two choices, two desires, two relationships, two identities, two dreams, or two versions of ourselves. We tell ourselves that we are waiting for the right time, gathering more information, protecting ourselves from making a mistake, or simply trying to keep our options open.
But sometimes what we call waiting is actually being stuck.
This book explores what happens when we finally choose.
When we choose thirst, we choose the things that sustain us from within—the deeper needs of the heart, soul, character, meaning, truth and purpose. That choice requires sacrifice. It requires us to leave some things behind. But through that choice, something within us develops.
When we choose hunger, we choose the things we desire—the achievements, possessions, recognition, experiences, relationships and ambitions that call us forward. Hunger can motivate us to grow, build, achieve and become more. But it also has a price, and unchecked hunger can leave us constantly wanting more.
And then there is the third choice:
choosing neither.
This is where the greatest danger may lie.
Because remaining in the middle is still a choice. It is the choice not to choose. And while we remain there, life continues to move around us. Opportunities pass. Relationships change. Dreams become distant. Our courage diminishes. Our potential remains unused.
Eventually, the place where we were once simply stuck can become the place where we slowly die—not necessarily physically, but emotionally, spiritually, relationally and purposefully.
The central premise of this book is simple:
Every meaningful life requires us to choose what we are willing to hunger for and what we are willing to thirst for—and to accept the price that comes with that choice.
There is no choice without consequence.
Choosing hunger develops one part of us.
Choosing thirst develops another.
Choosing neither develops nothing—and costs us everything.
This book is therefore not simply about making better decisions. It is about understanding ourselves well enough to recognise what is really driving us, what we truly need, what we genuinely desire, and why we sometimes remain trapped between the two.
It asks the reader to stop standing in the middle.
To examine the hunger within.
To listen to the thirst beneath the hunger.
To understand the price of choosing.
And, ultimately, to make the decision that only each individual can make:
What will I choose to pursue—and what am I prepared to leave behind in order to become the person I was created to be?
Because the greatest tragedy is not choosing the wrong path.
Sometimes the greatest tragedy is spending your entire life standing at the crossroads, afraid to take either one.
