South Africa to Saint Helena

Here is a practical relocation checklist for moving from South Africa to Saint Helena on a one-year (or longer) employment contract.

6–9 months before departure

  • Accept and sign your employment contract.
  • Confirm your start date.
  • Apply for your work permit or immigration clearance (your employer will usually assist).
  • Check that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your contract.
  • Decide whether you will take your dog and begin the pet import process immediately, as it can take several months.

4–6 months before departure

  • Arrange accommodation or confirm whether your employer will provide housing.
  • Prepare a realistic budget for your first three months.
  • Organize international medical insurance, including medical evacuation cover if it is not included by your employer.
  • Obtain certified copies of important documents:
    • Passport
    • Birth certificate
    • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
    • Qualifications
    • Professional registrations
    • Driver’s licence

2–3 months before departure

  • Book your flight from South Africa to Saint Helena.
  • Confirm your airport transfer and arrival arrangements.
  • Notify your bank that you’ll be living overseas.
  • Arrange access to online banking.
  • Inform SARS and any financial institutions if necessary.
  • Cancel or pause unnecessary subscriptions.

If taking your dog

  • Ensure your dog is microchipped.
  • Ensure rabies vaccinations and veterinary requirements are complete.
  • Obtain the required veterinary health certificates.
  • Secure the Saint Helena import permit.
  • Arrange transport through an approved pet relocation service if needed.

1 month before departure

Pack essentials:

  • Passport and travel documents.
  • Employment contract.
  • Prescription medication (at least three months’ supply).
  • Copies of medical records.
  • Laptop and chargers.
  • Universal travel adapters.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.
  • Light clothing and a warm jacket.
  • Bible or devotional books if they’re important to you.
  • A few personal keepsakes to make your new home feel familiar.

Financial preparation

  • Keep an emergency fund.
  • Have a credit or debit card that works internationally.
  • Carry a small amount of British Pounds (GBP) for your arrival.

First week on Saint Helena

  • Meet your employer and colleagues.
  • Move into your accommodation.
  • Register with local health services if required.
  • Buy groceries and household essentials.
  • Get a local SIM card if appropriate.
  • Explore Jamestown on foot.

First month

  • Attend a Sunday service at St. James’ Anglican Church if you wish.
  • Introduce yourself to neighbours.
  • Join a walking, sports, or community group.
  • Learn the island’s roads and villages.
  • Visit historic sites and enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

During your first year

  • Build friendships rather than rushing into commitments.
  • Volunteer if you have time.
  • Explore every district of the island.
  • Save part of your salary each month.
  • Stay connected with family and friends in South Africa through regular video calls.

From our previous conversations, I know you’re looking not just for a job but for a meaningful new chapter. Saint Helena offers a slower pace of life, a close-knit community, and opportunities to become genuinely involved in island life. If your application is successful, arriving with a spirit of service, patience, and curiosity will help you settle in well.
