Yesterday is gone

Yesterday is gone, embrace today

The Wonder of Becoming: Embracing the Journey of Life

There is something profoundly beautiful about the journey of life.

We spend so much of our time trying to understand where we are going, who we are supposed to become, and what the future might hold. We make plans, set goals, build relationships, experience successes and failures, and continually try to create some sense of certainty about our lives.

Yet perhaps one of the deepest truths about being human is this:

We are never finished becoming.

We can never go back to who we were.

We can never return to exactly where we once stood.

Yesterday is gone. That particular moment has disappeared into the story of our lives. The person we were then no longer exists in precisely the same way.

And perhaps we should not want them to.

You are allowed to become someone new

There are times when we long for the past.

We remember who we were before something happened. We remember a relationship, a particular season of life, an opportunity, a place, or perhaps a version of ourselves that seemed happier, more confident or more certain.

We sometimes wish we could go back.

But life doesn’t work that way.

The past can be remembered, understood and learned from, but it cannot be lived again.

And there is something incredibly freeing about accepting that.

You don’t have to become who you once were.

You are allowed to become someone you have never been before.

Every experience changes us.

Some experiences teach us wisdom.

Some teach us humility.

Some teach us courage.

Some break our hearts.

Some open our hearts.

Some reveal things about ourselves that we would rather not see.

And some awaken parts of us that we didn’t even know existed.

All of it becomes part of the journey.

Every day is an opportunity to become

Imagine waking up every morning with a simple intention:

Today I will become.

Become a little wiser.

Become a little more conscious.

Become a little more compassionate.

Become a little more courageous.

Become a little more honest.

Become a little more present.

Become a little more alive.

We often think transformation has to be dramatic.

We imagine that changing our lives requires enormous decisions and extraordinary circumstances.

But much of our becoming happens quietly.

It happens in the way we respond to someone who frustrates us.

It happens when we choose forgiveness instead of resentment.

It happens when we tell ourselves the truth.

It happens when we admit that we were wrong.

It happens when we listen instead of defending ourselves.

It happens when we choose to grow rather than remain comfortable.

It happens when we wake up and decide that today we will live differently than we lived yesterday.

These small moments accumulate.

And slowly, almost imperceptibly, we become someone new.

Don’t resist the movement of life

One of the reasons change can be frightening is because it takes away the familiar.

The human mind often wants certainty.

We want to know what is going to happen.

We want to know where we are going.

We want to know that everything will be okay.

But life does not offer us that guarantee.

Life is movement.

People change.

Relationships change.

Circumstances change.

Our bodies change.

Our priorities change.

Our beliefs change.

Our understanding changes.

Even our understanding of ourselves changes.

Trying to stop change is like trying to stop a river from flowing.

It creates unnecessary suffering.

Perhaps wisdom is not found in resisting the movement of life, but in learning how to move with it.

There are versions of you that have served their purpose

There are parts of ourselves that were necessary for previous seasons of our lives.

Perhaps you once needed to be extremely independent because you had learned not to rely on others.

Perhaps you once needed to be strong because life demanded strength from you.

Perhaps you once needed to protect yourself.

Perhaps you once needed to prove yourself.

Perhaps you once needed the approval of others.

But what helped you survive one chapter may not help you thrive in the next.

Growth sometimes means recognising that.

You can thank the old version of yourself for getting you this far without allowing that version to determine where you go next.

You can honour who you were without remaining who you were.

That is growth.

Stand in the wonder of life

We can become so busy trying to control life that we forget to experience it.

We spend our days thinking about yesterday and worrying about tomorrow.

And somewhere between the two, we miss today.

But stop for a moment.

Look around you.

Notice where you are.

Notice the people around you.

Notice your breathing.

Notice the light.

Notice the sky.

Notice the sound of the world.

Notice your own existence.

You are here.

You are alive.

And this exact moment will never happen again.

That is extraordinary.

Every second disappears as soon as it arrives.

We cannot hold it.

We cannot store it.

We cannot return to it.

We can only experience it.

Perhaps that is why presence is such a profound form of gratitude.

When you are truly present, you are saying:

“I recognise that this moment matters.”

Embracing life doesn’t mean everything is easy

To embrace life does not mean pretending that everything is beautiful.

Life can be painful.

There will be loss.

There will be disappointment.

There will be rejection.

There will be mistakes.

There will be moments when you question yourself and moments when you question life itself.

Embracing life means being willing to experience reality rather than constantly running away from it.

It means asking difficult experiences:

What can you teach me?

Not every experience is fair.

Not every experience makes sense.

Not every experience has an obvious lesson.

But even within difficult circumstances, we can sometimes discover something about ourselves.

We can discover strength.

We can discover compassion.

We can discover courage.

We can discover what truly matters.

We can discover that we are capable of surviving something we once believed would destroy us.

And sometimes the experience that we desperately wanted to avoid becomes part of the experience that transforms us.

You don’t have to know who you are becoming

Perhaps we put too much pressure on ourselves to have everything figured out.

We ask:

“What am I supposed to do?”

“Where am I supposed to go?”

“Who am I supposed to become?”

And sometimes we become frustrated because we don’t have the answers.

But perhaps you don’t need all the answers.

Perhaps you only need enough awareness to take the next step.

You don’t have to see the entire road.

You only need to be willing to walk.

Life reveals itself as we move through it.

Sometimes the next chapter only becomes visible when we have finished the previous one.

Sometimes we discover our direction by moving rather than thinking about moving.

And sometimes becoming requires us to step into uncertainty.

That can be frightening.

But it can also be exhilarating.

Because uncertainty means possibility.

What does it mean to live a good life?

Maybe a good life is not a perfect life.

Maybe it is not a life without pain, mistakes or disappointment.

Maybe a good life is simply a life fully lived.

A life in which you remain curious.

A life in which you continue learning.

A life in which you allow yourself to change.

A life in which you love deeply.

A life in which you forgive.

A life in which you become increasingly honest with yourself.

A life in which you appreciate ordinary moments.

A life in which you don’t postpone living until everything is perfect.

A life in which you stand in wonder at the extraordinary fact that you are here at all.

Perhaps that is enough.

Keep becoming

You cannot go back.

And perhaps that is not a tragedy.

Perhaps it is a gift.

Because if you cannot go back, then your energy can be directed toward what comes next.

You can stop trying to recreate yesterday.

You can stop trying to recover an old version of yourself.

You can stop believing that the best parts of your life are behind you.

There is still life ahead.

There are still things to learn.

There are still people to meet.

There are still experiences to have.

There are still possibilities you cannot yet imagine.

And there are still versions of yourself waiting to emerge.

So prepare yourself every day to become something new.

Prepare yourself to grow.

Prepare yourself to evolve.

Prepare yourself to change.

Prepare yourself to see the world differently.

Prepare yourself to see yourself differently.

And above all, prepare yourself to be amazed.

Because life is not something you eventually figure out.

Life is something you experience.

One moment.

One breath.

One conversation.

One lesson.

One choice.

One second at a time.

So embrace it.

Embrace the uncertainty.

Embrace the change.

Embrace the lessons.

Embrace the people.

Embrace the endings.

Embrace the beginnings.

Embrace the person you have been.

And embrace the person you are becoming.

Stand in the wonder of life every day.

Because this moment will never come again.

And perhaps the secret to living a good life is not finding a way to hold on to life—

but learning how to fully embrace it while it is here.
