Self-Forgiveness: The Beginning of Every Healing Journey

Before we can genuinely forgive others, we must first learn to forgive ourselves. We must acknowledge the ways we have hurt ourselves—not to live in guilt or shame, but to accept responsibility with compassion.

There comes a moment when we need to say to ourselves:

“I’m sorry.”

I’m sorry for the times I ignored my own needs. I’m sorry for the unhealthy food I fed my body. I’m sorry for the stress I allowed to consume me. I’m sorry for the destructive habits I embraced, the harmful environments I remained in, and the decisions I made that caused myself pain. I’m sorry for the words I spoke against myself and for believing that I wasn’t enough.

Self-forgiveness is not pretending those things never happened. It is acknowledging them, learning from them, and choosing not to continue punishing ourselves.

Many people find it easier to forgive others than to forgive themselves. Yet unresolved self-condemnation quietly shapes the way we see the world. It makes accepting love difficult, receiving grace uncomfortable, and extending genuine forgiveness to others far more challenging.

When we forgive ourselves, we stop fighting against our own humanity. We begin treating ourselves with the same compassion we would offer someone we deeply love.

Only then are we truly able to forgive others—not because they necessarily deserve it, but because we no longer want resentment to define our lives.

Self-forgiveness opens the door to healing. Forgiving others keeps that door open.

Healing is not about becoming someone new. It is about laying down guilt, shame, and resentment so that the person you were created to be can finally emerge.

The journey toward freedom always begins with these simple but life-changing words:

“I forgive myself. I choose to heal. And from that place of healing, I choose to forgive others.”
