What James teaches about the tongue
3:5–10 gives one of the clearest teachings:
- The tongue is small but powerful.
- It can build up or destroy.
- It can bless God and curse people.
- An uncontrolled tongue reveals an uncontrolled heart.
- A mature believer learns to surrender their speech to God.
The heart behind the tongue
The Bible consistently teaches that speech flows from the heart:
- Angry heart → harsh tongue.
- Proud heart → boastful tongue.
- Deceitful heart → lying tongue.
- Bitter heart → critical or slanderous tongue.
- Fearful heart → complaining tongue.
- Loving heart → gentle tongue.
- Wise heart → healing tongue.
- Grateful heart → thankful tongue.
- Spirit-filled heart → encouraging, truthful, and praising tongue.
The transformation of the tongue begins with the transformation of the heart. As Jesus said:
“A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.” — 12:35
When God changes the heart, He also changes the words that flow from the mouth.
