Unhealthy Style

The power we give to God in our lives as a Attachment Style seen as Love, Devotion and In Service Of.

This is a sacred and sensitive question – because unhealthy attachment to God is rarely named, yet it deeply shapes how people live, love, and suffer.

I’ll speak to this with respect, clarity, and depth.

When Attachment Replaces Relationship

Healthy relationship with God is rooted in trust, love, freedom, and growth.

Unhealthy attachment to God is rooted in fear, dependency, and self-erasure, even though it is framed as love, devotion, and service.

The difference is not belief – it’s where power is placed.

How Power Is Handed Over to God in Unhealthy Attachment

1. Authority Over Self-Worth

In unhealthy spiritual attachment, worth becomes conditional.

  • “I am only worthy if I obey perfectly.”
  • “God loves me when I sacrifice myself.”
  • “My needs are sinful or selfish.”

Love becomes performance-based, not relational.

God is experienced as a judge to appease, not a presence to trust.

2. Power Over Identity

The self dissolves into role.

  • “I exist to serve.”
  • “My desires must die.”
  • “My individuality is dangerous.”

Devotion becomes self-negation, not transformation.

Instead of becoming whole, the person becomes smaller — believing humility requires disappearance.

3. Power Over Suffering

Unhealthy attachment spiritualizes pain.

  • Suffering is proof of faith
  • Endurance is holiness
  • Boundaries are weakness

Pain is not discerned — it is sanctified.

This keeps people in harmful situations “for God,” even when harm contradicts love.

4. Power Over Decision-Making

God becomes the reason we silence intuition.

  • “God told me to stay.”
  • “Questioning is rebellion.”
  • “Obedience means not thinking.”

Discernment is replaced with fear-based submission.

The voice of God becomes indistinguishable from anxiety, conditioning, or authority figures.

5. Power Over Meaning and Salvation

God is made the sole source of meaning — but in a fragile way.

  • Without approval, life feels empty
  • Without certainty, faith collapses
  • Without service, identity disappears

This isn’t surrender – it’s existential dependency.

Why It Feels Like Love and Devotion

Unhealthy spiritual attachment often forms when:

  • Love was conditional in childhood
  • Authority was feared
  • Safety depended on obedience

So the nervous system learns:

“I am safe when I submit.”

God becomes the ultimate attachment figure – omnipotent, watching, approving or withdrawing.

Intensity feels holy.
Fear feels reverent.
Self-erasure feels virtuous.

The Cost of This Power Transfer

  • Burnout disguised as calling
  • Shame disguised as conviction
  • Fear disguised as faith
  • Silence disguised as humility

The soul is loyal – but the self is lost.

What Healthy Relationship With God Looks Like

Healthy faith does not require collapse of self.

It includes:

  • Relationship, not appeasement
  • Discernment, not blind obedience
  • Love that strengthens identity
  • Service that flows from fullness, not fear

God does not need your disappearance to be honored.

If God is love, love does not consume – it reveals.

Reclaiming Power Without Losing Faith

Healing does not mean loving God less.

It means:

  • Moving from fear to trust
  • From obedience to intimacy
  • From self-erasure to co-creation

God becomes a source of grounding, not control.

A Sacred Truth

If devotion requires you to abandon your voice, your body, or your humanity, then what is being served is not God  – but a wounded attachment pattern wearing spiritual language.

True faith does not demand your life force.

It gives it back to you.
